Contemporary Art in the Colourist tradition by Teresa Pemberton
About
the Work
As an artist I am continually re-inventing my changing relationship to
landscape and place. My conversations in paint take place on the ambiguous
boundaries of interior and exterior spaces, particularly the boundaries
where land meets water, either as coastal coves and beaches or river estuaries,
especially in Cornwall, East Anglia, Ireland, Spain, France or Greece.
The cross-overs of textures and colours are expressed in vibrant mixes
of oil paint. Both subtle and explosive combinations of colour excite
me. The Scottish colourists, the St Ives School and the Fauves have all
influenced me.
The works often begin with observational drawings,
which link with personal memories, thoughts and feelings, the drips and
splodges eventually becoming a creative meandering from the original scene.
Surface as well as colour is vital, both texturally and metaphorically. I try to capture the unexpected and invisible moments which lie beyond
the visual. Sometimes written thoughts or collaged elements are included
in the painting which eventually represents the sum of an experience.
